J-Ideas was formed in late 2003 in the Department of Journalism, College of Communication, Information and Media, with startup support from the Lilly Endowment and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. It is supported today through funds from Ball State University and from project grants from the McCormick Foundation, the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation and the Gannett Foundation.
“Ours is a mature program dedicated to youth. The campaign will help us maintain the capacity to do good work,” said Watson.
Watson said the goal of the campaign is to raise $50,000.
Since its inception, the institute had conducted numerous training programs in 23 states and the District of Columbia, serving nearly 7,000 students, teachers and school administrators. J-Ideas has developed award-winning, digital training tools on journalism and First Amendment topics.
J-Ideas also conducts a first-of-its-kind First Amendment training program for high school principals and administrators.
